Are You Missing These Key Health Informatic Skills On Your Resume?
My organization is hiring, scroll down for more information!
I recently reviewed a resume from a listener of the Health Analytic Insights podcast They had a strong clinical background (with over a decade of experience as a physician assistant) and strong communication skills (i.e., in a previous role they assisted in user adoption training)
They were looking to apply for a role as a healthcare data analyst and based on their resume they already had the below skills matching the job description of the healthcare analyst role:
✅Strong problem-solving, quantitative and analytical skills.
✅Knowledge of Medicare Insurance and policies preferred.
✅Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to explain technical terms to non-technical people and to explain business situations to technical teams.
✅Ability to handle multiple responsibilities and changing priorities.
✅Ability to quickly learn and implement knowledge of new technical processes.
✅Excellent organizational skills.
However, technical skills were the missing link from the job description they sent me as they were hoping to make the pivot into the role of a healthcare data analyst:
Ability to use business intelligence query tools, computer spreadsheet (Excel), and database languages (Access and others at advanced level).
Working knowledge of SQL.
Proven skills in report writing and report development. Dashboard development skills are a plus.
Proven skills with data presentation including charts, graphs and other exhibits
If this is something that you are struggling with, you can beef up your technical skills by working through the online course I have developed that will help you to gain experience working directly with a clinical dataset so you can obtain proficiency in SQL, Power BI (business intelligence query tool) and data presentation skills.

Best,

Hi Alana, first off, thanks for posting all this helpful information. I'm wanting to join the Health Informatics field somewhere here in Canada. I have 15+ years experience in healthcare. I was wondering, do you feel that taking a program in Health Informatics would be beneficial? If so, what are your thoughts on a a certificate vs a diploma vs a masters? Thanks!
