Do This to Help Get Your First Job in the Health Informatics Field
As hiring managers start to ramp up hiring after the winter break, in this series of newsletters, I will be focusing on what technical and soft skills YOU can develop to get your first role as a healthcare analyst in the health informatics field.
We will start with the result of developing these technical and soft skills and that would be creating a healthcare data analyst portfolio project in the form of a dashboard or report that you can showcase to hiring managers by linking to it on your resume or professional blog.
Why should you care about building a portfolio project?
When you are searching for jobs, you want to make sure that your time, money, and effort are being used as effectively as possible. Doing a quick Google search online will show several stories of individuals who obtained jobs from their portfolio projects or companies who mention the benefits of portfolio projects and how they set candidates apart from others.
In the past, new grads were trained by junior or mid-level staff, learning on the job, and although there are still some elements of this in the workforce because of the competitive nature of entry-level roles, the bar is much higher for the level of experience, and skills you are expected to bring to a role.
I remember when I was job searching, after graduating, for clearly defined entry-level roles but still saw 2 years of experience listed in the job description -_- . If you didn’t have an opportunity to do a placement or an internship during your schooling or you are pivoting into a healthcare analytics role from another field, a portfolio project can be a great way to showcase your skills. Not only can you showcase your technical skills but you can also show your understanding of the clinical domain.
Stay tuned to learn more about how you can build this clinical dashboard yourself and showcase the results to hiring managers:
